Harold Lee Washington was an American lawyer and politician who was the 51st Mayor of Chicago. He became the first African American to be elected as the city's mayor, and he held the position until he died in November 1987. Before his time as mayor, he also served as an Illinois state representative and in the US Congress. His legacy lives on today through the Harold Washington Cultural Center and Library in the downtown Chicago area. Ida B. Wells was born in Mississippi in 1862, just 6 months before the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. She is known for her journalism highlighting issues about race and politics in the South, her abolitionist and feminist beliefs, and leading an anti-lynching crusade in the United States in the 1890s. Wells moved to Chicago in 1893, where she continued to fight for equality for African-American people.
